REVIEW - Suits: LA Series Premiere

Even though Suits: LA has already premiered, I finally had the chance to sit down and watch the first episode, and I have some thoughts. I definitely have mixed feelings—but none strong enough to make me stop watching. This show already had an uphill battle as a spin-off of a series that was not only well-constructed and expertly told but also had a unique hook that set it apart from traditional legal dramas.

A lot of people forget that the original Suits wasn’t just about high-stakes legal battles—it was about a guy (Mike Ross) pretending to be a lawyer in a high-powered law firm. That central premise gave the show an extra layer of tension and intrigue, making it more than just another legal series. It wasn’t until Mike left the show that Suits fully transitioned into a traditional law drama, but even then, it maintained its sharp storytelling and dynamic character relationships. That’s the real challenge Suits: LA faces—without that kind of built-in hook, it needs to rely on its characters and writing to set itself apart from every other legal show out there.

That being said, the premiere does a great job of capturing the tone and feel of the original Suits, which makes it easier to settle in. The quick-witted dialogue, stylish cinematography, and fast-paced energy all feel familiar, making longtime fans feel right at home. However, I do think the first episode moves a little too fast, trying to pack in a lot of setup for the season’s narrative all at once. Some moments could have benefitted from more breathing room to let the stakes sink in, but despite that, the episode still successfully introduces the main cast and establishes the dynamics we’ll be following.

Stephen Amell immediately commands attention in the lead role, proving yet again that he has the presence and charisma to drive a series. He plays the wealthy, confident, and ambitious character effortlessly—something fans of his portrayal of Oliver Queen will recognize. But Amell isn’t the only standout. Suits: LA boasts a strong supporting cast, with Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg all making an impact right out of the gate. Each of them brings their own energy to the series, and it’s clear that this ensemble has the potential to develop a compelling on-screen chemistry. Even the secondary characters are given just enough depth in the premiere to spark interest in how their roles will evolve.

While I do wish the first episode had slowed its pacing slightly to let certain moments land more naturally, it still manages to deliver a strong start. There’s enough intrigue, personality, and potential to keep me invested, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the series develops. Suits: LA has a tough road ahead in proving itself, but if it leans into sharp storytelling and strong character dynamics, it has the potential to carve out its own identity in the Suits universe.
